Women’s Basketball opens TCCAA with win over Roane State

The Motlow Bucks outscored visiting Roane State 23-14 in the second quarter on their way to a 56-51 win over the visiting Raiders on Wednesday at Nisbett Center. It was the TCCAA conference opener for both teams.

Motlow (1-0, 2-3) will travel to Volunteer State (0-1, 1-5) in Gallatin on Saturday for another conference game. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. The next home game is Monday, Nov. 20, with non-conference Snead State (AL) visiting for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.

After playing to a 9-9 tie in the first quarter, Motlow exploded in the second quarter behind guards Dan'Angela Wilson, Ja'Mya Gooch, and Lovely Alexander, building a 32-23 halftime lead. The Raiders closed the gap to 42-38 after three quarters, but the Bucks hit their free throws down the stretch and closed the door on the visitors.

Alexander, a freshman from Clarksville, led Motlow in scoring with 18 points, adding two assists and two steals. Gooch, a sophomore from Nashville, scored 17 points with four steals and two rebounds. Wilson, a freshman from Nashville, added 12 points and six assists.

Samara Calso scored five points, while Autum Nunemaker and Brenivye Richardson each scored two. Nunemaker led the Bucks with nine rebounds.

Motlow shot 50 percent from the field and from three-point range, while making 14-18 free throws.
